- Tell us a bit about your job and how long you’ve been with the company.
I have worked at Liberty IT, Belfast, for the past 10 years starting off as an Engineer and progressing through each grade sequentially right through to Project Manager, which I’ve been for the past 6 years.
- Describe a typical day for you.
Ideally, I like to get to the in-house gym in our Belfast office early, getting my day off to the right start! Once at my desk, I usually spend the first part of my morning sorting through and responding to emails I’ve received overnight from our global colleagues in Liberty Mutual Insurance. Then I start to prioritise tasks for myself and the team for the rest of the day. I also think it’s very important to coach and mentor team members both in a group situation and on a 1-1 basis, so I take time with the team every day to ensure any concerns or issues are resolved quickly. The rest of my day is spent speaking with stakeholders whether that is in face-to-face meetings or with colleagues based in other countries via video conference, Lync or email.
- Tell us about your education and how you came to work in IT.
I really enjoyed Sciences at school and combined with having a father working in engineering, my interest in software began to grow. I have fond memories programming with my ZX Spectrum and then BBC Micro! I studied Electrical Engineering at University followed by a MSc in Computing and Information Systems. I’ve now spent 20 years in the IT industry and have never looked back.
- What attracted you to work at Liberty IT?
I knew a few people who already worked here and they had nothing but good things to say. In particular two qualities really stuck out for me – the stability and the integrity of the company. Ten years later and I still believe the company has those qualities.
- What has been your most memorable moment working in LIT?
There have been many enjoyable and memorable moments with the company, both socially and from a professional perspective. Having the opportunity to move from a technical role into a management role was very rewarding. I’ve also really enjoyed celebrating the major milestones with the company, seeing it get to its 10 year anniversary and more recently, 15 years.
- What would you say is different about working in Liberty IT in comparison to other companies?
I’ve never worked in an organisation that focuses so much on empowering all employees – regardless of their role. I’ve always felt in Liberty IT that employees can make a difference. There are numerous action groups which mean that people from all levels and roles can influence and help shape the future of the organisation. Everyone has a voice and has the opportunity to provide feedback and direction.
