Steven, Principal Business Analyst

  • What is your role and how long have you been with the company?

I have been with Liberty IT for 3 years. I originally joined the company as a Business Analyst but 8 months later, I was promoted to Senior Business Analyst and just recently to Principal Business Analyst.

  • What does your job entail?

I work within our Global Specialty Finance team and we support the financial applications within the company. I suppose you could say that I act as a “buffer” between our internal business customers and the developers. I help our customers determine their needs, advising them on the best process to achieve this. Then I liaise with the developers, effectively communicating these business needs to ensure an optimal outcome for both parties.

  • Tell us a bit about your education and how you came to work in IT.

I went to Nottingham University and studied Computer Science and Business Studies. Although I studied Maths, Physics and Biology at school, I’d always had an interest in IT and Business and so studying the combined degree enabled me to learn about the technologies but also how to apply them in the real business world. Following graduation, I returned to Northern Ireland and joined the Graduate Scheme of a local Financial Consultancy firm and from there, my knowledge of IT and financial systems snowballed and after 6 years, I decided to try something new and joined Liberty IT.

  • What type of training have you received since you joined the company?

I’ve undertaken various types of training and am currently studying for a Business Analysis Diploma, which is a recognised qualification in the industry.

  • What attracted you to work at Liberty IT?

In my last company, travelling was a huge part of the job and whilst there are numerous opportunities to travel with Liberty IT, I like that it doesn’t dictate the majority of your work-life. Another thing that attracted me was the company’s great reputation. I kept hearing good things about it from people who already worked here and also from the recruitment agencies so that encouraged me to apply.

  • What’s the best thing about working in Liberty IT?

One of the best things for me is the flexibility of the company and the focus on the balance between home-life and work-life. It’s very relaxed and fun yet completely professional. I also appreciate their dedication to recognising talent – if you are willing to put in the work, you will be recognised and rewarded for your achievements.

  • What has been your most memorable moment working in LIT?

For me, it was celebrating the company’s 15 year anniversary. The weekend long celebrations kicked off with a party for employees and their partners in the Titanic Belfast. The atmosphere was fantastic and made even better by a performance from famous comedian, Sean Lock.

  • What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I play hockey for my local team and I also enjoy playing golf.

  • What would be your dream job?

I’d love to be a professional golfer.

  • What advice do you have for potential employees joining Liberty IT?

Just to go for it! It’s always an unknown joining a new company, but speaking from experience, I settled in really quickly and you will too.
