Boston Mayor Celebrates Belfast Connection with Liberty IT
Mayor of Boston visits local company Liberty IT on homecoming trip
Thursday 25th September 2014; Belfast-based Liberty IT, a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Mutual Insurance, one of the largest property and casualty insurers in the world, is honored to be hosting Boston Mayor, Marty Walsh, during his homecoming visit to Ireland.
Chosen for its strong ties to sister city Boston, Liberty IT will host the Mayor and a small number of representatives from local companies and charities with similar links to the US city, for a celebratory reception in its Belfast Headquarters as part of the Mayor’s homecoming trip.
Welcoming Mayor Walsh, James McGlennon, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Liberty Mutual Insurance said, “We are honored to host Mayor Walsh during his travels home to Ireland and thank him for his contributions to economic development including his support of our Boston Home Office expansion while he was a member of the Massachusetts legislature. Speaking from my own experience as a native of Ireland now living in the Boston area, I have no doubt that the Mayor will enjoy his time here.”
“Belfast was a natural choice for the first Sister City agreement of my Administration,” said Mayor Walsh. “Historically, these agreements have been exclusively about cultural exchange and the promotion of tourism, but we want to use this program to work toward a broader base of economic partnerships: a strategic alliance in the global economy that will bring growth and good jobs to both cities. We build that partnership with the support of businesses like Liberty Mutual and others who are investing in their workforce in both Boston and Belfast.”
William Hamilton, Managing Director, Liberty IT, said, “We are absolutely delighted to have Mayor Walsh here in our Belfast office. Since setting up our operation, we have gone from strength to strength, diversifying our global software, services and solutions to meet the expanding needs of our parent company, Liberty Mutual, and in the process, increasing employment here in the city. With Liberty’s expansion in both Belfast and Dublin, we plan to continue to grow our operations across Ireland and further strengthen our cultural and commercial ties with our sister city.”
During his visit, Mayor Walsh will also be the Guest of Honour at the Homecoming and Belfast One City Conference on Friday 26th September, held in Titanic Belfast. Mr. McGlennon will also be in attendance and will participate in a roundtable discussion with some of Northern Ireland’s leading business people.
